An Informal Chat January 8, 2014

Conversation

There are opportunities for PC TECH students to write and act out informal dialogues to demonstrate their grasp of conversational English.  We often use many more contractions than in formal written English; sentences are short; some slang and idiomatic expressions can be employed where appropriate.

Kevin and Suleymane have scripted this role-play:

S:  Hi!  How are you doing?  My name’s Suleymane.

K:  Hi, my name’s Kevin.  I am from France.

S:  Really?  I dream about Paris.

K:  Oh, I’m not from Paris.  I live in Marseille and I’m here to learn English.

S:  Me too.  I am in Level 2 and my teacher’s name is Mr Frank.

K:  Wow!  So we’re going to be in the same classroom.

S:  That’s good.  Are you working right now?

K:  Oh no!  Just sometimes…a part-time job [in my country].  And you?

S:  No, but I take care of my uncle’s children.  Then every week their parents give me cash.  But, you know, that’s not enough.

K:  That’s interesting!  Do you like it?

S:  Of course!  I learn some words from the children.

K:  Really?  That’s good…

I think we’re going to be late.  We have to go.

S:  Yeah, so let’s go.
